Background
The Erasmus+ project “Communicating Migration and Mobility, E-Learning Programs and Newsroom Applications for Sub-Saharan Africa” (CoMMPASS) focuses on migration and mobility as one of the key priorities of the AU’s overall strategy. From April 1st, 2023 to March 31st, 2026, CoMMPASS conceptualizes and implements an e-learning curriculum on media and migration for sub-Saharan African higher education institutions. The project will thus support the much-needed digital transformation of higher education in this region with specific user-oriented didactically designed tools. Strengthening journalism training capacity will help to improve the quality of information and public discourse on migration and mobility in countries of origin, transit, and destination, at a time when the African media industry is struggling to tell the ‘African story’ of migration.
Six universities from three African countries (Burkina Faso, Malawi, Uganda) participate in the project together with two universities from Europe (Germany and Portugal) and alongside eight universities from other African countries (Ethiopia, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, and Nigeria) as associated partners. Among further partners are the African Media Initiative, the Media Challenge Initiative, UNESCO, and the World Journalism Education Council.
The CoMMPASS project trained more than 100 researchers and teachers at partner and associated partner higher education institutions, more than 1,500 students and journalists and professionals participating in the CoMMPASS online courses in four key languages for sub-Saharan Africa (English, French, Portuguese, Kiswahili). CoMMPASS furthermore supported sustainable regional networks as far as African journalism educators and African journalism students are concerned.
